The place where we reside in this infinitely huge universe is special considering you can read this post & I can write it! We stay on the planet Earth from where we gaze at the night sky after the sunset to watch the moon. But, do you know that the earth itself carries a bucket full of amazing facts with it and with you! We will now go through some of the most exciting and intriguing features & facts about our very own mother Earth.
- Some rocks found on Earth are actually pieces of Mars!
- Many layers of atmosphere coat our planet including the mesosphere, ionosphere, exosphere, and the thermosphere, but it’s the troposphere, closest to the planet itself, that supports our lives and is, in fact, the thinnest at only about 10 miles high.
- Believe it or not, most of the Earth’s deserts are not composed entirely of sand. Much, about 85% of them, are rocks and gravel.
- The Earth is, in fact, not really round. It is called an oblate spheroid meaning it’s slightly flattened on the top and bottom poles.
- Experts from the USGS claim that roughly 1,000 tons of space debris rains down on Earth every year.
- Earth travels through space at 66,700 miles per hour.
- From a distance, Earth would be the brightest of the 9 planets. This is because sunlight is reflected by the planet's water.
- Earth is tipped at 23 and 1/2 degrees in orbit. That axis is what causes our seasons.
- The age of the earth is around 4.6 billion years old.
- The temperature of Earth near the center, its thought to be at least 7,000 degrees Fahrenheit (3,870 Celsius).
- The largest meteorite crater in the world is in Winslow, Arizona. It is 4,150 feet across and 150 feet deep.
- Although earthquakes can be deadly, most are very small and not even felt by humans.
- Earth was originally born as a twin to the planet Theia, which was about half as wide as Earth and roughly the size of Mars. The two planets shared an orbit for several million years until they collided. Earth absorbed Theia, and the remaining debris eventually coagulated into Earth’s moon. The mass donated by Theia gave Earth the gravity necessary to sustain a substantial atmosphere!
- The circumference of the earth around the poles is about 30 miles less than it is around the equator.
- The Earth weighs an estimated 6.6 sextillion tons! To see what that number looks like, we’d have to write two 6s, followed by twenty zeros, or 6,600,000,000,000,000,000,000 tons.
- The birth of Earth’s moon is singularly important because it stabilizes Earth’s tilt. Without the moon, Earth would still have wild changes in climate and be uninhabitable. The stabilizing tug of the moon tempers Earth, resulting in the minor tip that causes summer and winter seasons.
